The name DJ Grampa Kempa began as a joke from a younger DJ-colleague. Because let’s be honest, in a world where DJ’s are born after 1990, a birth year of 1961 stands out. But Paul Kemper carries the name with pride. Because where others have to guess at a real disco vibe, he was there when it happened.
De Soul Show and Funkytown generation
Paul’s musical roots came through the ether. Addicted to the Ferry Maat Soul Show on Dutch Radio 3 and Funkytown on the Belgian radio, he developed an obsession for the groove. It did not stay at listening. From 1979 to 1986 he travelled through Noord-Brabant and Limburg with his drive-in show ‘Paradisi’. While his companion mixed in the Dutch songs, Paul claimed the domain of the disco. From legendary venues like De Ster in Cuijk and Place de Meir in Oud-Gastel to Time Out in Gemert. Paul learned the trade on the road.
The second career
Blood is thicker than water. A few years ago Paul make his comeback in the scene in Eindhoven. Not as an oldie who was stuck to the old days, but as an energetic selector who connects the dots.
Things moved fast
From intimate christmas drinks in Microlab and sets at café De Kram en Wilhelmina, to festivals like Peteyfest and the Disco Caravan at Solar. His connection to the Los Eindjelos collective grew from an opening set to co-organisor.
The sound
DJ Grampa Kempa does not just play tracks; he tells a story. His “Holy Grail” lies with the original Philly Sound and Motown classics, which he mixes seamlessly with pumping Funky and French House of now. He moves, stimulates and reads the crowd like only someone with decades of experience can.
My mission
Simple. Make the younger generations feel where their house music came from. And unite everyone – young and old – into that single, universal groove.
